Yakan Weaving Village

On the outskirts of Zamboanga City, Yakan weavers from Basilan island maintain a cooperative village where the finest hand-woven textiles in the southern Philippines are produced on backstrap looms. Yakan cloth — characterized by dense geometric patterns in bold primary colors, each motif encoding cultural meaning — takes weeks to complete a single meter. Visitors can watch the weaving process, commission custom pieces, and buy directly from the weavers at prices that reflect the true labor involved.
