Sunken Cemetery

Bonbon, Camiguin, Northern Mindanao

An enormous Latin cross rises from the water just offshore at Bonbon, marking a cemetery submerged by the eruptions of Vulcan Camiguin between 1871 and 1875. The lava flows that buried the old town of Catarman sank the graves permanently below the waterline. Snorkelling over the crosses and tombstones at high tide — intact after 150 years — is one of the more quietly eerie dives in the Philippines, equal parts geology lesson and ghost story.
