San Agustin Church (Intramuros)

Intramuros, Manila, NCR

The oldest stone church in the Philippines, built between 1589 and 1607 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church survived the 1645 earthquake, the 1762 British occupation, the 1945 Battle of Manila, and everything else that has happened to the city around it. The trompe l'oeil ceiling paintings, carved choir stalls, and 17th-century religious art inside are among the finest surviving examples of colonial Philippine craftsmanship; the silence inside, in contrast to the noise of the walled city beyond the door, is absolute.
