Sabang Beach

Baler, Aurora

The birthplace of surfing in the Philippines. A two-kilometer crescent of dark volcanic sand faces east over the Pacific, where consistent swells arrive from October through March. The 1979 film Apocalypse Now was shot partly here, and its cast inadvertently introduced surfing to the locals. Forty-five years later, the beach still carries the unhurried energy of a town that discovered something good and never let go.
