Romblon Marble Quarries

Romblon province is the marble capital of the Philippines, producing stone of internationally competitive quality in white, grey, pink, and black varieties. The heritage buildings of Romblon town — including Fort San Andres, built in 1640 — are constructed from local marble, and the cottage workshops produce everything from gravestones to decorative bowls. Watching a craftsman hand-polish a freshly quarried slab, the stone warming from grey to luminous cream, is oddly meditative in a town where the material is simply everyday.
