Rizal Park and National Museum
Manila, NCR
The vast park at Manila Bay's edge is both a public gathering space and the site of José Rizal's execution on December 30, 1896 — the monument marking the exact spot is the symbolic center of the Philippine nation. Behind the park, the National Museum complex occupies beaux-arts government buildings containing the finest collection of Philippine art and artifacts in the country. Juan Luna's Spoliarium — the enormous 1884 painting that is the most famous work in Philippine art — hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts.
