Rio Hondo Floating Village
A sprawling community of Badjao sea gypsies living in stilt houses built directly over the brackish shallows of Rio Hondo estuary — one of the largest such settlements in the Philippines. Narrow plank walkways connect hundreds of homes, mosques, and small shops in a maze that feels entirely self-contained above the water. The Badjao, who once lived exclusively on their lepa-lepa boats, are skilled divers and weavers; their handwoven malong fabric in bold geometric patterns is sold throughout the market.
