Palanan Wilderness Area
Palanan, Isabela
Deep in the Sierra Madre, Palanan holds one of the largest remaining tracts of old-growth lowland rainforest in the Philippines. Accessible only by small aircraft or a five-hour boat ride, this isolated wilderness shelters Philippine eagles, cloud rats, and endemic orchids found nowhere else. It was also where Emilio Aguinaldo was hiding when American forces captured him in 1901. The isolation that once protected a fugitive now protects a forest.
