Mt. Apo
Davao del Sur / North Cotabato, Davao Region
The highest mountain in the Philippines at 2,954 meters, an active stratovolcano whose summit holds a crater lake, sulfurous fumarole fields, and the largest old-growth mossy forest in Mindanao. The standard three-day climb via Kidapawan passes through lowland dipterocarp forest, cloud forest thick with orchids and pitcher plants, and a volcanic moonscape of boulders above the treeline. At dawn the summit reveals Mindanao spread below and the Celebes Sea glittering to the south.
