Batanes' active stratovolcano rises 1,009 meters above Batan Island, dominating the landscape from every vantage point in the province. A technical day hike through dense cloud forest leads to a summit where, on clear mornings, Taiwan is visible to the north and the entire Batanes archipelago spreads to the south. The mountain last erupted in 1454—but fumaroles still hiss in the upper flanks.
