Monfort Bat Cave
Samal Island, Davao del Norte, Davao Region
A single cave on Samal Island certified by Guinness World Records as the home of the world's largest colony of Geoffroy's rousette bats β approximately 1.8 million animals roosting in a space the size of a basketball court. At dusk, the exodus of bats forms a stream visible from half a kilometer away, a living dark river that takes 30 minutes to fully exit the cave mouth. It is one of the most astonishing wildlife spectacles in Southeast Asia, largely unknown outside the Philippines.
