Maranao Torogan Heritage Houses
Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, BARMM
The torogan is the traditional royal house of the Maranao people β a massive ancestral structure raised on hardwood posts with an upswept roof covered in intricate okir geometric carvings that are the visual language of Maranao Islamic art. Several pre-war torogans survive in and around Marawi City, their carved facades encoding a cosmology that predates Islam in the region. The artistic tradition these buildings represent is one of the most sophisticated indigenous architectures in Southeast Asia.
