Mangyan Heritage and Hanunuo Script

Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, MIMAROPA

The Mangyan are eight indigenous tribes of Mindoro who have maintained traditional cultures β€” bark cloth clothing, distinctive script, and upland agriculture β€” through centuries of coastal pressure. The Hanunuo Mangyan script is one of only three pre-colonial Philippine scripts still in active use, recognized by UNESCO as endangered heritage. The heritage center in Calapan documents Mangyan material culture; the Hanunuo living near Bulalacao still weave binukot cloth and use the ancient script for love poetry.
