Ligawasan Marsh

Cotabato Basin, SOCCSKSARGEN

The largest freshwater marsh in the Philippines — over 300,000 hectares across the Cotabato Basin — and one of the most important wintering grounds for migratory waterbirds in the archipelago. During the northeast monsoon, tens of thousands of shorebirds stage here from as far as Siberia; resident populations include Philippine duck, purple heron, and the rare Philippine cockatoo. The floating villages of the Maguindanao people along the marsh edge are among the least-visited indigenous settlements in the country.
