Jolo Grand Mosque

Jolo, Sulu, BARMM

The Friday Mosque of Jolo, rebuilt several times on its original 16th-century site, is the spiritual seat of the Sulu Sultanate — the polity that governed the southern Philippines and much of Borneo for 600 years. The mosque's architecture blends Middle Eastern and Malay influences with distinctly Sulu proportions. The surrounding market is one of the most diverse trading environments in the southern Philippines: Tausūg, Sama-Bajau, Chinese, and Malay traders have coexisted in this space since the 14th century.
