Intramuros and Fort Santiago
The walled city of Intramuros was the heart of Spanish Manila from 1571, its thick stone walls enclosing churches, government buildings, and the military Fort Santiago at the river's mouth. Nearly destroyed in the 1945 Battle of Manila and substantially reconstructed, the cobblestone streets give a convincing sense of the colonial city. Fort Santiago, where José Rizal spent his final night before his 1896 execution, retains its dungeon cells; bronze shoes embedded in the courtyard floor mark each step of his final walk to the firing squad.
