Corregidor Island

Cavite City, Cavite

The small island at the mouth of Manila Bay served as the last line of defense during the Japanese invasion in 1942. Today its ruins—gun batteries, barracks, and the Pacific War Memorial—stand in jungle that has reclaimed the island over decades. Walking between the ruins at dusk, with the bay turning gold and bats emerging from the old tunnels, nothing else in the Philippines feels quite like it.
