Calauit Safari Park

In 1977 Ferdinand Marcos ordered the evacuation of the indigenous Tagbanwa people from Calauit Island and imported African wildlife — giraffes, zebras, and Cape buffaloes — to stock a personal safari park. Today the island is a sanctuary where giraffes graze between endemic Calamian deer and monitor lizards. The Tagbanwa have returned as rangers, and the park carries the full moral complexity of its origin alongside its extraordinary visual strangeness: one of the most unsettling and beautiful wildlife parks in Southeast Asia.
