Bongao Peak

Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, BARMM

A 314-meter limestone summit rising dramatically from the center of Tawi-Tawi's capital island, simultaneously a sacred site and a monkey sanctuary. Hundreds of long-tailed macaques live on the forested slopes under community protection β€” considered sacred by local Muslims and left entirely undisturbed. The summit trail passes through fig forest and arrives at a viewpoint over the full Tawi-Tawi island group, the Celebes Sea, and on clear days the mountains of Sabah on the horizon.
