Binondo Chinatown
Manila, NCR
The oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594 by the Spanish colonial government to organize Manila's Chinese trading community. The dense streets around Ongpin and Nueva carry 430 years of Chinese-Filipino commercial energy: roasted duck hanging in windows, dried mushroom sellers, wholesale herbal medicine, and a network of restaurants alive with tikoy, pancit Canton, and hopia from century-old bakeries. At Chinese New Year the streets become impassable and the noise and color are total.
