Basilan Rainforest Interior
Basilan, BARMM
Basilan Island's mountainous interior, rising to the 800-meter summit of Mt. Gutaran, harbors one of the most intact lowland rainforest remnants in western Mindanao. The forest shelters the Basilan hornbill, Philippine eagles, and a population of the Mindanao wrinkled hornbill found nowhere else in the island group. Ranger-guided forest walks from Lamitan reach primary canopy within two hours, entering a world of strangler figs, wild orchids, and the constant percussion of unseen hornbills in the upper canopy.
