Bantay Bell Tower

Bantay, Ilocos Sur

Built in 1591 on a hill above the Bantay plain, this detached watchtower was designed to sight pirate raids from the sea. It stands apart from the church it served, alone on its rise, offering views across the Ilocos flatlands. The Ilocano word bantay means "to guard"—and the tower still looks the part after four centuries of standing watch.
